The first four of the new Pawukon cycle are special religious days and most Balinese people in the northern part of the island will celebrate it feverishly. The day is called Pagerwesi. Pagerwesi Day, which falls on Wednesday, Buda Kliwon Sinta (Balinese Calendar), is the third most celebrated holidays in Bali after Galungan and Nyepi Day. Balinese Hindus celebrate Pagerwesi every six months (210 days) according to the pawukon calendar systems.

Literally the mean of Pagerwesi means ‘iron fence’. Pager (fence) and Wesi (iron) – and reflects the purpose of this important event, it is the day to strengthen one’s fortification against evil. The correlation between Pagerwesi and Saraswati day is that knowledge is so powerful that it must be protected from the bad influence.

Pagerwesi day is also a day upon which an ancient battle between good and evil is celebrated. The three days preceding Pagerwesi have special names and are for special activities. Sunday, the first day of Pawukon is called \"Banyu Pinaruh\".\"Banyu\" means water and \"Pinaruh\" mean wisdom. In other words, we must have wisdom which always flows like water and which is useful for human kind, many people who live near the sea go to the Segara or The Beach at dawn and symbolically purify themselves by bathing.

This is a special day for fishermen, who make offerings for their boats and nets. Monday is called Soma Ribek, a day that is not widely celebrated. Tuesday is Sabuh Emas, when one is supposed to make offerings for jewelry, especially that of gold and for the Chinese coins that are often used in many kinds of offerings.

On this day, Balinese make and present special offerings to the God as Supreme Teacher we usually called Sanghyang Pramesti Guru as a sign of gratitude to the God and God of nine directions for their meditation. Another offering is also presented to the holy spirit of each family’s ancestors, a ceremony and prayers are held at respective family temple as well as at village temples throughout the island. All members of the family also make a visit to their deceased family member that has not been cremated in the cemetery. The philosophy of this celebration is that they must keep knowledge, health, food, cloth and gold high in their lives to keep the universe in balance.
